French Immersion

SHS offers an early French Immersion Program. Students enter the program at the Kindergarten or Grade 1 level. The instruction in Grades 1 through 6 is 25% English and 75% French. Kindergarten classes are conducted entirely in French with some use of English at the beginning of the program to establish routines.

The French Immersion Program provides students with an opportunity to learn a second language by using it. Students acquire both a knowledge and functional use of the French language by the end of the Senior 4 program. This learning is enhanced through a rich variety of activities such as special assemblies, field trips, cross-grade sharing, as well as cultural experiences.

The mixture of academic, social and cultural learning opportunities encourages students to develop a positive attitude toward all cultures. A pamphlet describing the French Immersion Program is available from the school office.

Ukrainian Bilingual Program

The English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program enables students to study approximately 50% of their school day in English and 50% in Ukrainian. Students enter the program at the Kindergarten or Grade 1 level. Ukrainian Language Arts, Art, Music, Social Studies and Health are taught in Ukrainian. English Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Physical Education are all taught in English.

The program features cultural content through experiences such as St. Nicholas Day, concerts, traditional crafts, and Christmas and Easter customs.

Children in the English-Ukrainian Bilingual Program also receive Basic French instruction, beginning in Grade 4.

Physical Education at SHS uses many activities to develop a physically active lifestyle which will enhance your child(ren)’s quality of life.

An outdoor and gymnasium based program are offered. Students should dress appropriately to participate indoors and outdoors.

Grades 3-6 students are expected to wear a suitable T-shirt or sweatshirt with shorts or sweatpants and non-marking gym shoes.

Notes are expected if children are not able to participate in gym classes and are also needed for the students to return to class after they have missed class due to an injury.

Students are strongly encouraged to participate in the intramural program. As well, the school participates in most of the Divisional sports activities each year.

Music

From Kindergarten to Grade 3. music provides multi-activity songs and singing games to establish a beat, develop motor skills, explore dramatic play, and to experience instrument playing individually and in an ensemble.

The Grade 4-6 program provides a wider variety of music playing opportunities combining recorder playing, singing, movement, listening and Orff instruments in meaningful class projects and performances. Students participate in many experiences throughout the year to help them develop an appreciation of music making. Students have opportunities to perform in class and choir groupings, participate in music festivals, receive guest artists in the school and attend outside of school performances.
